Wondering if you have carpal tunnel syndrome or how to treat it? Massage therapy can help.
What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is the inflammation or pressure of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in your anterior wrist. Classic symptoms include numbness and tingling in the hand, difficulty grasping or carrying objects and, sometimes, hand pain. In some cases the pain is worse in the evening, disrupting sleep and preventing a good night’s rest.
What Causes Carpal Tunnel?
Carpal tunnel is most often considered a repetitive strain or overuse injury, stemming from activities that contain forceful or repetitive hand movements, continual hand-arm vibration and/or working for long periods in the same or awkward positions. The actions can be as simple as working at your computer all day, or as complex as practicing the cello or violin many hours everyday.
Certain illness and medical conditions can also contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome, particularly those that cause swelling in the joints and soft tissues. These include diabetes, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, and hypothyroidism.
How Can Massage Help?
Massage therapy is one of the most effective, least invasive treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome. It not only relieves the pressure on the nerve, but also increases the micro-vascular blood supply to all the nerves in the area, thereby substantially reducing pain. If the carpal tunnel pain is due to the nerve getting constricted in the spinal area, the massage therapist can broaden out the treatment, loosening up the muscles that are contributing to the constriction and loosening up the pressure on the nerve.
